Goals: 

  • Promote awareness of risks associated with Phytophthoras in nurseries and restoration areas.
  • Share Best Management Practices (BMPs) in nurseries, through the AIR program, and habitat restoration areas to prevent Phytophthora outbreaks.
  • Share major findings of case studies to understand Phytophthora ecology and behavior in natural habitats.
  • Round table with nursery practitioners and scientists.

Morning Session

9:00-9:10 am: Welcome and introduction

9:10-9:40 am: From nurseries to restoration areas: Phytophthora spp. movement risk- Sebastian Fajardo

  • Phytophthora: Basics of Ecology and Dispersal.
  • Risks and importance of Phytophthoras in native environments.

9:40-10:00 am: Accreditation to Improve Restoration (AIR) program updates- Johanna Del Castillo.

  • AIR program: Recap and yearly update.
  • Overview of AIR BMPs.

10:00-10:20 am: Best Management Practices (BMPs) in restoration sites- Sebastian Fajardo

  • Learning how to scout and identify potential Phytophthora symptoms in the field.
  • Overview of best phytosanitary practices for outplanting.

10:20-10:45 am: Coffee Break

10:45-11:30 am: Workshop 1: Outplanting BMPs, symptom scouting and sampling guidelines.

11:40-12:00 pm: Round table: Nursery and restoration practitioners share their practices, questions, and concerns.

Afternoon Session

1:00-1:15 pm: “Rusts for nurseries”, creating awareness of white pine blister rust in nursery production - Charles Barnes

  • Blister rust LAMP assay.
  • Awareness of symptoms and signs.

1:15-1:25 pm: Research update: Assessing Phytophthora in restored areas of Eastern Sierras National Forests.

1:25-1:45: What is the risk of Pythium species in California native plants?

  • Results from plant testing from AIR certified nurseries.
  • Current and future work at characterizing Pythium species from native California plants.

1:45- 2:30 pm: Workshop 2: Detection methods and troubleshooting (what we do in the lab)- Johanna Del Castillo.

  • How to process pear baits. 
  • Research update on efficacy of Phytophthora detection tools.

2:30-3:00 pm: Wrap up meeting and any final Q&A
